Round-Up of Halloween Photos

Catching up on some Halloween blogging. Here's the fun in photos:

N before his preschool Halloween parade:

N's preschool class (minus one butterfly who felt too shy to be photographed):

Pumpkin Carving! I love N's expression in this one:
The finished pumpkins. J's is the tall one with a "shark mouth." N's is the "happy face."

The boys convinced me to put up some spider webs. They loved putting spiders in them.

Our sign and candy:

I didn't get a good picture of our boys on Halloween night as N refused to cooperate, but here's a good one of J and our zombie neighbor:

Hope you all had a happy Halloween!

Partridge and a Pear Tree

This year B and I got invited to an adults costume-required Halloween party. The theme for the party was Nightmare Before Christmas so we decided to go with Christmas themed costumes. B came up with the idea of a partridge in a pear tree and then I decided he could be the pear tree and I would be the partridge. My costume took me a few weeks to complete, but B's was quite quick and easy to make.
Getting ready to head out. As you can see, N was quite intrigued by my new shoes. He really wanted to wear them.

My partridge costume was inspired by this owl costume I found on Pinterest.

I took an old full slip and shortened it. Then I cut out lots of "feathers" from a faux silk material. I started with larger feathers and sewed them on in rows starting at the bottom hem of the slip. Once I reached the waist, I switched to much smaller "feathers." I continued in this fashion until the whole slip was covered in feathers. I added additional rows of feathers over the straps and the dress was complete. I used a bit of fabric glue to attach the sides of the feathers together to keep them from flapping too much and showing the white slip below.

For the wings, I used this tutorial that I found on Pinterest. I cut out two quarter circles for the wings and sewed the top edge of them to a long length of sheer silver ribbon. I made loops with the ribbon at the end of each wing to slip my hands through.
Inspired by a photograph of a partridge, I decide to do stacks of feathers (silver, white, dark brown, gold). Then I sewed them on in rows starting on the bottom edge of the wing. After I finished the rows of "feathers" I sewed over the feathers back along the top edge of the wings (where the ribbon was) to keep them from flopping down.
Finally I added two snaps to the ribbon where the wings rested over the straps of the dress. This way I could snap the wings to my dress to keep the top edge in place.

I also made some feather earrings and two feather hair clips. I ended up wearing one clip in my hair and one on my dress.

B's pear tree costume was fun and much easier to make.

I bought a green t-shirt at Old Navy ($5) and some fake pears (one bunch of 8 pears) and fake ficus branches at Michael's( I used 3 ficus branches at around $0.75 each). I attached the branches onto the t-shirt by tacking each branch on at various points. I used wire cutters to separate some of the branches into smaller parts as needed. Then I used the wire cutters to cut the pears off the branches they came on and sewed them onto the ficus branches. I used a bit of fabric glue on the thread to make sure the pears stayed secure.

For B's pants, I bought an inexpensive pair of khakis at Wal-mart ($10) and used acrylic paint to make them look like wood/tree trunk.

This is my favorite part.
As you can see below, we had fun wearing our costumes at the party.

So that's how I've been spending my crafty time. Now that the party is past, I can go back to knitting. Hope to share some of that soon.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween was filled with crafting and sewing for me this year. I made this:

A "field journal" to hold food for the animals he was rescuing.

And this:
A rescue pack--for J's Diego costume.

I made these:
For N's "Poley" or polar bear costume.

Here they are on Halloween:
As you can see, N refused to even try on his polar bear "sweater" and J decided to wear his Spiderman costume from last year. Oh well.

At least J wore the Diego costume to our neighborhood Trunk or Treat and his school Halloween parade.

B and I also got invited to an adult Halloween costume party this year. J decided we should be Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. So I made a hooded cape for me and a furry tunic with tail, hood and ears for B.

Anyway, hope you all had a fun-filled Halloween!

I'm ready to take a break from sewing and get back to my knitting. I am ALMOST finished with my Salina sweater and can't wait to get it finished. Maybe one day it will get cold enough here in Texas to actually wear it. Maybe :).

Rescue Pack

J decided a while ago that he wants to be Diego, the animal rescuer, for Halloween. All of the Diego costumes I found were really cheap looking, but cost over $30, so I decided to buy a few pieces and make a few others to create our own costume. J decided the three things he really needed were a vest, a Diego watch and a field journal. I ordered a vest and watch and started making a field journal.

Then yesterday he decided he really needed a rescue pack. Fortunately, I just bought an orange fleece remnant last week and I had some foam sheets with my craft supplies. After about 15 minutes of planning and 10 minutes of sewing and another 10 minutes of cutting out craft foam:

The Rescue Pack is finished!

It's not as functional as I'd like (I didn't make sides, just a front and back so it's really shallow), but it will hold a few small items and J is really excited about it.

Next up, trying to make a polar bear costume for N. Wish me luck!

Oh, what a Night!

Well, we had a blast last night for Halloween. The boys, B and I all went out trick or treating with another family in the neighborhood. Once we joined up with our friends, J got very brave and really got into trick or treating. N had a blast climbing up and down off people's porches and putting candy into his pumpkin. Then we came home and handed out the rest of our candy (we'd left a bowl out while we were trick or treating). About 8:15 we ran out of candy, turned out our lights and called it a night. It was so much fun watching our boys have so much fun! Definitely our best Halloween yet!

Dear Neighbors...

Dear Neighbors,
I'm just writing to let you know that my boys and I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into decorating your houses for Halloween. It is so much fun walking down to the park and enjoying all the fun decorations we pass along the way. N really likes to point out all the pumpkins. I think the scarecrows are nice looking. J loves it all. He loves the ghosts and black cats and spiders. He even likes the skeletons. However, we all agree. That this:

Yes, this:
Is a little creepy. What's up with that?

Although I guess I shouldn't complain. I'm sure not everyone enjoys our lovely homemade decorations...

Happy Halloween, everyone! Hope you and yours have a great one!

Still Not Halloween...But We're Having Fun!

Yesterday we went to our neighborhood Fall Festival. It was amazing! The boys had so much fun! They wore their costumes and had fun trick-or-treating amongst the different sponsor booths. The petting zoo was a favorite for both boys. We also rode a train, played carnival games and both boys jumped in a bounce house for the first time--yes, J finally went in WITHOUT me! Unfortunately, my camera battery died right before we went on the train so I don't have any pictures of the bounce house or carnival games.

N actually wore his hat! I was so excited I took pics in the parking lot:
My two cuties (watching a plane):

At the petting zoo. N enjoyed the view from the outside first:

J had to jump right in--although he wasn't so sure about that goose:

Petting the rabbits:

Trying to feed the piglets:

When N came in the enclosure, he was so excited. He kept running from animal to animal. I think he liked the goats best:

Watching B feed the llama:

And then my camera battery died...

But I put in my spare this morning to take this picture of N and his crazy bedhead. It may be haircut time soon!
