Photo Highlights of a Fun Visit

Just got back from another fun visit back to Ohio. Got to spend quality time with B's parents and brother and I got to go out with my good "mom friends" there. Didn't get to see extended family or old neighbors or co-workers as this was a short visit. Hope to catch up with them next time. Here are some of my favorite photos from the trip:

On the hammock with Grandpa.

At Memphis Kiddie Park, Grandma and N on the roller coaster.

J (with me) on the roller coaster.

A rainy day at the Cleveland Zoo.

Camel ride.

This koala was actually awake and moving around! Since they sleep 20 or more hours a day, this was pretty exciting to see.

Uncle Mike and J as meerkats.

Using our umbrellas at the zoo. The boys LOVED their new umbrellas.

At the Natural History museum. Dinosaurs!

The boys loved this "Little Builders" exhibit at the museum.

So much fun!

Then we came home and I got this:

From the best husband EVER! Yes, my husband made French Silk Pie--and didn't eat any until we got home.

Life is good.

Happy Anniversary, Love

Today is my 11 year wedding anniversary.

One of the lines in a current favorite song is "you put your arms around me and I'm home."

Whenever I hear it, I think of B. I've been in his arms for the last 11 years and I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be.

Happy Anniversary, Love.

Enough Said

B got this Christmas card from a hotel because he stayed there so often last year. It was one of several he frequented for work travel. It's not even the one he stayed at the most often.

I am SO glad he will NOT be traveling with his new job. I am SO excited to see him every day.

15 years ago today...

15 years ago today, I met some friends at a bar to drink some beer (even though we were all underage and I was recovering from mono).

15 years ago today, we left the bar and went back to a room in a frat house to hang out some more.

15 years ago today, I sat on a bed and shyly held hands with a guy who gently played with my fingers as everyone talked.

15 years ago today, I realized I had found a guy who made me smile and laugh.

15 years ago today, I realized that--even though I'd just sworn off guys for a bit after a few too many upper class frat jerks--this was one guy that I couldn't resist.

15 years ago today, I smiled and laughed and realized I was already starting to fall for this wonderful guy.

Thank you, love, for fifteen years of love and laughter. I can't imagine my life without you in it.

Ten Years Ago Today...(or More Than You Ever Wanted to Know About My Wedding Day)

Ten years ago today, B and I got married. It was a wonderful day full of joy and family and friends. It was a beautiful wedding and a really fun reception. And for ten years now, I have been blessed with a wonderful husband.

As I think back on my wedding day, it's funny the little details that I remember.

I remember that I wanted my sister to spend the night before with me (like I did with her the summer before) but she didn't-- so I woke up alone in the bed I slept in as a child. I couldn't believe my wedding day had finally arrived.

I remember that my mom bought sandwiches (turkey and apple) from Magnolia Foods but I was too nervous/excited to eat much.

I remember arriving excitedly at the church to get dressed with my bridesmaids: my sister, B's sister, my college friend Nicole and two best friends from high school, Ann and Emily.

Ann and Emily arrived last with a bag from Burger King. They'd had a late night the night before. They had taken B and his groomsmen out for an informal bachelor night in "happening" downtown Lynchburg.

I remember that my sister couldn't find her earrings. I had given all the other bridesmaids a pair of dangling pearl earrings as a gift, but Cat already had a pair so I gave her a necklace instead. But the day of my wedding, Cat couldn't find hers so my mom lent her a pair that had belonged to her mom. They were perfect. They looked exactly like the new pairs except they were screw on instead of pierced. Since my mom's mom, my sister's namesake, couldn't be there (she passed away when we were babies), it seemed appropriate that something of hers be there with us.

I remember that my something old was a handkerchief that my grandmother had made for my great grandmother. Grandmother had passed away a few months before the wedding and I thought a lot of her that day. I also thought a lot of Corrine.

I remember my something borrowed were my mom's pearls and my something blue was my sister's garter. My brother caught it at her wedding the summer before and happily passed it back to me for mine.

I remember feeling so perfect in my wedding dress, but struggling to get my veil to look right--and getting grumpy with my sister about it.

I remember taking pictures with the bridesmaids and with my family before the ceremony in the church courtyard. We had to be sneaky so we didn't run into B. I remember there were these little tiny bugs that keep swarming around my veil and, at one point, we had to rush under cover when it started to sprinkle.

I remember that my bouquet, cream roses, was really heavy and much bigger than I had wanted. I remember that the bridesmaid bouquets weren't quite right either, too pastel, but I didn't really care because I was so happy that it was my wedding day.

I remember being so ready just to walk down the aisle and see B.

I remember walking proudly next to my dad down the aisle. He looked so handsome in his tux. I remember saying hi to friends and family on the way to meet B at the front of the church.

I don't remember much about the service except being glad that I was Presbyterian and that the service was pretty short. I have a vague recollection of my ring getting stuck but am not sure if that is an accurate memory or not. I mainly just remember being really happy that B and I were finally getting married. We dated for five years and I had known I wanted to marry him when I was nineteen years old. At twenty-four, it was finally happening.

I remember kissing B at the end of the ceremony and then going in for a second kiss because the first one was too short.

I remember feeling like I was floating at the end of the ceremony as we walked hand-in-hand down the aisle.

I remember how my brother's girlfriend, now wife, had decorated the trolley that we were taking to the reception with our groomsmen and bridesmaids. She had even decorated a Styrofoam cooler which was stocked with champagne. I remember thinking how lucky my brother was to have her. I thought back to the year before when we had ridden the same trolley to my sister's reception in the middle of a huge storm and I was thankful for the nice weather.

I remember our reception in snippets. Little things.

I remember being proud of how beautiful the setting was as all our college friends experienced this part of Virginia for the first time. I remember being so happy that so many of our friends had traveled to come to our wedding. I remember that two of them had to leave early because oddly enough they had another wedding in my home town to go to that evening.

I remember standing and greeting a long line of people and my friend Kate bringing B and I drinks.

I remember feeling grateful for B's one high school friend who traveled all the way from New York to be at our wedding.

I remember trying to sit and eat but getting interrupted every time until almost all of the food was gone and I was still hungry. Somehow we managed to get plenty of drinks.

I remember taking lots of group pictures: my mom's side of the family, my dad's side of the family, B's family, all of our friends from William & Mary.

I remember that B had brought a few kegs of beer from the brewery in Ohio where he worked and that all of our friends kept asking for a cup of "B's beer."

I remember my friends Ann and Emily hanging out in the cigar bar with my dad and uncles and how my friend Ann made an impression on all of them when she wet her cigar.

I remember how at one point I thought everyone had cleared out early because the reception area was empty. Then I realized that everyone had just wandered outside to enjoy the beautiful evening.

I remember "dancing" with B for our first dance and telling him that he had to at least move his feet a little because he was just standing on the dance floor holding me.

I remember dancing with my dad and thinking of all the other dances we'd danced together when I was little.

I remember dancing with my grandfather and being grateful to have him there, but worrying that he was going to fall each time he swayed. I remember he was so proud of himself for wearing the same suit he had worn to my sister's wedding the summer before. I remember being so proud of him for holding it all together only a few months after my grandmother's death.

I remember B's little cousin Olivia, around 5 at the time, kept wanting to dance with me.

I remember our friend Chris catching my garter and how happy I was that he caught it.

I remember B's cousin Kara, about 8 at the time, catching my bouquet and feeling bad for all my single friends.

I remember cutting the cake with B and how I neatly fed him some. I remember him holding a piece of cake and looking at me and telling me he was going to put it on my face because people would be disappointed if he didn't. I remember staring in disbelief as he actually did it. I remember being mad at him about it for much too long afterwards. MUCH too long. In fact, this might be the first time I've told that story without getting a little upset about it. Sad, but true.

I remember that every time B and I were apart during the reception, I just had to go find him because I wanted to be with him all the time.

I remember B kept making "suggestive" comments to me and was ready for us to leave. In his defense, we had been in separate states for the last year and hadn't seen each other in several months.

I remember that my dad had rented a limo to take B and I to Charlottesville after the reception because we had a 6AM flight the next morning (our flight out of Lynchburg had been canceled and thus our night at a local bed n' breakfast had to be canceled too). Unfortunately, the limo driver got lost and was over an hour late to arrive.

I remember that the band was kind enough to play an extra hour. I remember that my brother-in-law volunteered to drive us to Charlottesville. I remember that finally we were staging a fake exit because the photographer had to get home to take his babysitter home when the limo pulled up.

I remember that we left our reception wearing Mickey and Minnie house hats, mine with a veil and B's with a top hat, because B had bought them while at the World Brewing Conference in Orlando a few months before. Everyone kept asking if we were going to Disney for our honeymoon.

I remember having to give the limo driver directions and then being very happy to finally be alone with B as we drove the hour or so to our hotel for our first night as husband and wife.

I still can't believe that it's been ten years. I feel so very blessed.

Happy Anniversary, honey. I love you so much!

When the boys get older...

Today as we walked into the house (though the garage and past all the lawn equipment), J informed me that when he and N get older they are going to "help Daddy cut the grass while Daddy sits in the house and drinks beer." I could tell immediately that B has been talking to the boys about their future duties and knew that B would be happy to know that J was listening and excited. J then informed me that when he and N get even older they are going to "drink all the beer in the house themselves." I don't think B will be very happy about that at all.

Well, honey, if you're ready this...consider yourself warned.

Happy Belated Father's Day!

On Sunday, we celebrated Father's Day although things were a little hectic because my mom was in town. Anyway, my favorite moment from the day was when we told N to tell B "Happy Father's Day." N looked at B and said "poop" and went on with what he was doing. Nice. One of the problems of potty training--potty talk. Oh well.

Thanks, love, for being such a wonderful dad to our boys. We are so blessed to have you!

Because I love him...

So my husband is going through a bit of a Chuck Norris stage. It all started when he found this t-shirt at Target. Then it continued when I got him this one for Valentine's Day. Then I had a chance to go to a glass painting night with some friends and while everyone else painted their wine glasses, I made these:

Chuck Norris doesn't step on toes. He steps on necks.

Champions are the breakfast of Chuck Norris.

Nice, huh? Nothing says true love like Chuck Norris.

The Three Loves of My Life

What did you expect? Chocolate, books and knitting?

I am truly blessed to have such lovely men in my life.

9 years ago today...

9 years ago today I was counting down the hours until my 2:00PM wedding.

9 years ago today I couldn't believe my wedding day had finally arrived.

9 years ago today I was counting my blessings...I was about to marry the man of my dreams.

9 years ago today I was trying to force myself to eat some lunch but was too excited to eat much of my turkey sandwich.

9 years ago today I arrived at the church to be surrounded by my loving bridesmaids--my sister Cat, my two best friends Ann and Emily (who arrived with a bag of Burger King), my good friend Nicole and Brian's sister Kristin.

9 years ago today Cat couldn't find the earrings she owned that matched the ones I had given all the other bridesmaids to wear for the wedding and had to borrow a pair from my mom.

9 years ago today I wore the same garter (my something blue) that my sister had worn the summer before (borrowed from my brother who caught it at my sister's reception).

9 years ago today I wore my mom's pearls (my something borrowed) and carried a handkerchief my great grandmother had made (my something old) in my bouquet.

9 years ago today I waited for the rain sprinkles to stop so I could take pictures in the church garden with my family and my bridesmaids. All I could think about was that Brian would be here soon doing the same thing with his family and groomsmen.

9 years ago today I walked down the aisle in the dress of my dreams (I felt like a princess) with my dad by my side (I always was Daddy's little girl and I got teary walking with him).

9 years ago today I had a huge smile on my face as I spotted Brian waiting for me.

9 years ago today we had a short and sweet Presbyterian wedding ceremony.

9 years ago today my husband kissed his bride...twice.

9 years ago today we posed for pictures as husband and wife with our two remaining grandparents--my Granddaddy and Brian's Grandma Marlowe. Granddaddy was so proud of himself for wearing the exact same powder blue tuxedo he had worn to my sister's wedding the summer before.

9 years ago today I was missing my grandmother who had just passed away in June.

9 years ago today the photographer kicked everyone else out of the church so Brian and I could have a moment or two alone as husband and wife.

9 years ago today I rode a trolley with Brian and our wedding party from the church to the reception. My future sister-in-law Shelley had decorated it complete with a flower-covered cooler full of champagne.

9 years ago today I partied with tons of friends and family at a beautiful wedding reception.

9 years ago today everything was a blur as I tried to talk to everyone while being with Brian as much as possible. I couldn't believe he was really my husband.

9 years ago today I realized how truly blessed I was to have so many friends and such an amazing, yet crazy, family.

9 years ago today all my guests disappeared as everyone wandered outside to enjoy a beautiful summer afternoon in Virginia.

9 years ago today my two best friends smoked cigars with my dad and my uncles and humored them all immensely.

9 years ago today Brian and I had our first dance to "Never My Love" and I had to keep reminding him to move his feet.

9 years ago today my dad put Brian's dancing to shame by twirling me all over the dance floor.

9 years ago today I danced with my grandfather--worrying the whole time that he was going to fall over.

9 years ago today Brian's six year old cousin kept dragging me out to the dance floor to dance.

9 years ago today I felt such pride that one of the beers on tap was "Brian's beer" that he had brought from the brewery in Ohio where he was the brewmaster.

9 years ago today I kept trying to enjoy some of the delicious food and kept getting pulled away for some official part of the reception like photographs, first dances or cake cutting--at least someone (thanks, Kate) brought me a beer.

9 years ago today I kindly fed Brian a piece of cake and then was horrified to hear him say that he was going to push cake in my face. (It only took about 8 1/2 years to forgive him for that one.)

9 years ago today our limo got lost on its way to pick Brian and I up from the reception and the band kindly played an extra hour.

9 years ago today we were faking our exit for the photographer who needed to get home to his babysitter when our limo finally showed up. My wonderful brother-in-law (thanks, Ron) had just offered to drive us an hour to Charlottesville where we had an early AM flight.

9 years ago today we left our reception wearing a Minnie Mouse veil and a Mickey Mouse top hat because Brian had just been in Orlando for the World Brewing Conference.

9 years ago today Brian and I made out like teenagers in the back of a limo since we hadn't been in the same state for months and, well, we'd just gotten married.

9 years ago today Brian and I said "I do" and I felt so very blessed to have met such a wonderful, loving, sexy man who loved me so very much.

9 years ago today I had no idea what the future might hold, but I knew who would be holding me in the future.

Happy Anniversary, love! Thanks for 9 wonderful years. I never would have guessed all the twists and turns our lives would take together. I can't wait to see what the future might hold! Here's to many many more years together. I love you so much!

What Happens When Your Husband Goes to Target

Nice, huh? My home feels so classy now--like I live in a bar or maybe a frat house. At least N likes them. Everyone needs some good beer doormats to entertain their little ones.

The Best Father's Day Gift

J went shopping with me yesterday and picked out a tee ball set, Yahtzee and M&Ms for B for Father's Day. B, being the wonderful man he is, was thrilled with all his goodies.

Today at the pool, J gave B an even more special gift.

J has always been a cautious, somewhat anxious child. He likes going to the pool, but doesn't like to get splashed and is hesitant to be in the pool without holding onto either B or myself. He's slowly getting more comfortable, but has only been in the pool without holding on to us when he could touch the bottom. Even with his inner tube and his life jacket, he was unwilling to let go.

Anyway, today we were playing in the pool--N was floating around with me and B had J in his inner tube. At one point, B and J decided to sneak up on me. I had my back to J. As they got close, B gave J a big push and he floated alone over to me. Instead of freaking out, J thought this was really fun. He proceeded to "sneak up" on me over and over. Each time he went further and further on his own in his inner tube. He was doing a pretty good job of motoring around by kicking his feet underwater. I know this is no major achievement for the average three year-old, but for my little guy this was a huge deal.

B had an enormous smile on his face the whole time. Afterwards, he told me it was the best Father's Day gift he could ever receive. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful man as my husband and as the father of my children. Happy Father's Day, honey!

Only my husband...

This is B's To-Do list he made for himself this weekend:

He cracks me up.

It all started with a little fence damage from some storms we had this week--more hanging out in the bathroom with Pepper and the boys during a tornado warning.

I love how he changed "ANT POISON" to "POISON ANTS" to make it fit better with the rest of his list.

I don't know where "TAKE OVER WORLD" came from, but it's so B.

Did I mention that he cracks me up?

My Boys: LOTS of Recent Photos

I've been taking lots of pictures of my boys (shocking, I know), but have been so busy working on baby presents that I haven't gotten a chance to share my pics. Here's lots of pictures and some mini-updates on life with my boys.

N with one of his many "walkers."

N and J looking out the window in N's room.

Pepper stopping N from climbing the stairs. He's quick these days and will make it to the top before you turn around. Luckily, Pepper likes to lie on the stairs and chew her bone--so she stops him for me. She takes her job very seriously. It's pretty adorable.

J and N in the car cart at Lowe's. This was N's first time "driving" and he LOVED it!

J helping N walk from the patio to the grass in the backyard. N is doing a lot of walking these days. He usually takes anywhere between 4 and 12 steps before he reaches his destination or falls and crawls.

N watching Pepper in the backyard. If you look closely, you can see his little curl of hair sticking out at the bottom of the back of his head.

After she was done running around, Pepper brought N her toy so they could play. She loves to play with N. I love the look Zoe is giving the two of them.

J told me, "Mom, take a picture of my hands." So I did.

B doing "Daddy duty" as we headed up to get the boys ready for bed.

J playing in the backyard.

J and N playing with the rainwater that had collected in the cupholders of the sand and water table. I love it when they play so nicely together.

N loves to splash in water--I have to keep a close eye on the dogs' water bowl.

N relaxing after a good meal. Silly boy! He's still a good eater and makes me happy because he LOVES peas. I've been fixing mixed veggies. N eats all the peas and some carrots. J eats one kernel of corn. It's better than nothing. I'll take it.

We went to the King Tut exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art as an early birthday present for B. Not really the best thing for a one year old and a three year old, but we still had fun. When J was asked to tell his grandma what he saw he told her, "Water, blue things, and a movie." So that about sums it up!

Hope you all are having a good week. In other family news, my cousin Christie is doing her last rounds of chemo this week and next week. So that has us all thrilled! Please keep her in your prayers that she's not in too much pain as these last few doses of chemo are going to be extra strong to make sure the cancer's butt is thoroughly kicked to kingdom come. Despite the pain, Christie is so happy to be almost done and can't wait to return to work. She's an amazing person and I am so proud of the way she and her husband have handled this whole ordeal.
