A new Christmas tradition...

A book advent calendar!

I saw this on Babble.com and then pinned it on Pinterest.com, but it's really from Babycinno Kids.
I wrapped up a bunch of our Christmas books into 24 packages (most have one book, but 4 or 5 have two books--mainly because I couldn't narrow it down any further). I alternated between three simple wrapping papers I found in the Target dollar bins and displayed the books on our mantel. Starting on December 1st, we open and read one package a day. I love that this cost me nothing (except the wrapping paper) and does not involve candy. I love that it forces us to sit down and enjoy a good book together every day through out the busy holiday season. I love that my boys love books so much that they are really excited about our new book Advent. And I love that it allows us to talk about so many aspects of Christmas including baby Jesus and the nativity as well as the spirit of giving. I will list the books we included once they all get unwrapped. I didn't think to write down the titles before I wrapped them.

Our first book was The Story of Christmas by Patricia Pingry--a great board book that tells the story of Baby Jesus in a way that is very understandable for young children. Our second book was Merry Christmas, Curious George by H. A. Rey. Curious George has recently regained popularity at our house and is a daily request from N.

Again, I am loving this new tradition and highly recommend it!

Haley, this is a fantastic idea! Every day you're giving your boys the gift of time and attention.

What a great idea! My boys are probably too old for it now (and do you really have that many Christmas books?), but I still love it!
